Facts
What is it?
- Deforestation is the removal of a forest or stand of trees from land which is then converted to a non-forest use. Deforestation can involve conversion of forest land to farms, ranches, or urban use. The most concentrated deforestation occurs in tropical rainforests.
- It is estimated that withing 100 years there will no longer be any rainforests
- Forests cover more than 30% of the Earth's land surface
- Most deforestation is happening in the tropics
- Industrialized countries consume 12 times more wood and its products per person than the non-industrialized countries
- Agriculture is the leading cause of deforestation
- One and a half acres of forest is cut down every second
- 137 species of animals are becoming extinct each day, which adds up to 50,000 species disappearing every year, because of deforestation.
- In North America, about half the forests in the eastern part of the continent were cut down for timber and farming between the 1600s and late 1800s
- Deforestation happens because of farming, grazing of livestock, mining, and drilling
Who is deforestation affecting?
- Deforestation affects pretty much everyone, because the loss of trees can cause climate change, desertification(loss of biological productivity), soil erosion, fewer crops, flooding, increased greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, and a host of problems for indigenous people.
Possible solutions
- For farmers to find a stable farming practices, technologies, and crops
- To start planting trees or just let forests regenerate by themselves over time
- Ban the cutting of forest trees
With these being taken into action then the ecosystem will be able to repair itself and the wildlife will return, the water systen restablished and the soil will replenish
